Hey, I’m Betty

A professional Voiceover Artist, Filmmaker, Coach, Speaker and Entrepreneur.
Yet beyond these titles, I am so much more.

Through working for over 15 years as a Director, Editor, Creative, and VoiceOver Artist in the TV, Film, and Radio industries, I recognise the invaluable gifts each of these roles has offered me. Directing has taught me how to be a better leader, Editing has taught me how to be a better storyteller (and overall tech-whizz) & Voice work has taught me how to be a better communicator. All of these modalities have welded together to create the entire embodiment of the offerings in this website…

Let me tell you a story…

So I have been the voice of BBC Radio 1 now for 5 years and before I was even offered an audition to get this incredible opportunity, I was directing a film for Annie Mac & Clara Amfo. We filmed, we edited, we graded, and then we needed to do the sound mix, that’s when an email landed in my inbox that said something along the lines of: Hey, we hear you’ve made a film for Annie and Clara, and we’ve love to do the Sound Mix at BBC Radio 1, would you be able to come in and assist?’. Something in me just started melting tbh, because I used to have a serious ambition as a kid to be in Radio, I remember I won a competition with Capital Disney at the ripe age of 12 years old for creating a 3 minute radio show with my dictaphone. I also worked as a hospital radio DJ at Radio Marsden for 6 months taking requests from the patients and playing good old Sinatra and Aretha to the wards at Paddington Hospital. Then, I was a Drum n Bass DJ for 5/6 years in my late teens / early twenties. Music and the arts have always been a big staple of mine, so of course when I received that email - I was incredibly excited.

I call that story above a NOW or NEVER Moment, something I go into in one of my podcasts, it’s those moments that come once in a while, that you know, if gone well, could be a game changer. I remember that week, the excitement got to me and I canceled all my plans leading up to it, got the best sleep every night, didn’t drink, just really put this meeting as the biggest priority of my LIFE, just so I could feel tip top and completely on point for the session.

When I finally got to R1, I was guns blazing. Quite literally! So blazing in fact, I received an email from the Head of Station Sound Matt Fisher to come in and see if I’d like to audition to be the lead continuity Voice of BBC Radio 1 once Greg James took over from Nick Grimshaw as the almighty Breaky host. Now here is how THAT convo went…

Betty: I’m not sure if I can do it…
Matt: Don’t worry, we can see something, and although you might not see it right now, we have the skills here to be able to know how to help you discover it.

M E L T.

Can you even believe that? This guy could see something, and was willing to take a bet on me. And after this, I realised something massive… the penny dropped…

What made me say ‘I’m not sure I can do it’ was my mind, my fear & my limiting self belief. Once I had that little vote of confidence, that cheerleader giving me that little nudge in the right direction… well, everything changed.

And I realised this is actually something we all suffer with greatly, this misguided perception we have of ourselves.

After experiencing that at R1, I began to see this in everyone, this unseen potential, this brilliance in all beings, that jewel, that skill, that talent inside(!!!) - and whether that's through a VoiceOver career, levelling up their business, unlocking their creativity or performing with their voice to be a better communicator - it doesn't matter, because I know, that whatever it is, it’s already there and on the cusp of being found.

So on this note, I warmly welcome you to explore the world of Bettylish. Keep coming back to check-in as you won’t want to miss the newly updated offerings, because trust me when I say, they will be coming in fast and hot.

Love, Betty X

We often worry and fear to use our voice.
To speak our truth.
To express our soul.
When really we should worry about what happens if we don’t.
